On July 29th, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) awarded Professor Han Linhai from SKLMMCS the 2024 ASCE Distinguished Service Medal Award-Region 10, recognizing his significant international academic influence in the field of civil engineering and his outstanding contributions as an associate editor of theJournal of Structural Engineeringand as a distinguished lecturer.
Founded in 1852, ASCE is the oldest engineering society in the United States and one of the most authoritative organizations in the field of international civil engineering. Region 10 is ASCE's international region, encompassing 174 countries and regions. The ASCE Distinguished Service Medal Award-Region 10 honors individuals who have made outstanding contributions within Region 10. Each year, no more than three individuals globally receive this award. Professor Han Linhai is the first recipient fromthe Chinese Mainland.
Academic Profileof Professor Han Linhai
Professor Han Linhai holds a Ph.D. in engineering and has been a dedicated researcher in the field of concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) structures for over 30 years. He established a comprehensive safety analysis theory and design technology system for the entire lifecycle of CFST structures and innovatively developed high-performance CFST hybrid structures. His work has expanded the safe application range of primary structural systems in large and complex civil engineering projects. He has published 255 SCI-indexed papers, holds 36 authorized national invention patents (two of which received the China Patent Excellence Award), and authored five monographs (including two in English). He has been listed among Elsevier’s Most Cited Chinese Researchers for ten consecutive years and ranks among the top three globally in annual impact in civil engineering according to Stanford University’s list of the top 2% of scientists. His research outcomes have been widely applied in major civil engineering projects, including Beijing’s CITIC Tower (China Zun), Guangzhou’s New TV Tower, Chengdu Tianfu International Airport Terminal, and Ya’an Ganhaizi Grand Bridge, generating significant social, technological, and economic benefits. He has led the formulation of six technical standards, including the national standard“Technical Standard for Concrete-Filled Steel Tube Hybrid Structures”GB/T 51446-2021, and spearheaded the development of the first ISO international standard for CFST structures,ISO/FDIS 16521 Design of Concrete-Filled Steel Tubular (CFST) Hybrid Structures.
Professor Han also serves as the Chair of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Subcommittee on "Steel-Concrete Composite and Hybrid Structures" (ISO/TC 71/SC 9), Vice President of the China Association for Engineering Construction Standardization, and Vice President of the National Technology Standard Innovation Base (Building Engineering). He holds editorial roles in the civil/structural engineering journals of China, the United States, and the United Kingdom. In 1997, he was selected as a first and second-tier candidate in the first batch of the national "Hundred, Thousand, and Ten Thousand Talents Project." He received funding from the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholarsin 2004, was appointed as a Changjiang Scholar Distinguished Professor by the Ministry of Educationin 2014, and was recognized as a National Chief Science Communication Expertin 2019. As the principal contributor, he received the State Natural Science Award (Second Class) in 2019, the First Prize of the Ministry of Education Higher Education Scientific Research Excellence Award in Natural Science in 2022, the First Prize for Standard Technology Innovation in 2022, and the Special Prize for Teaching Achievements in Guangxi in 2023. His other honors include the Outstanding Contribution Award for Young and Middle-aged Experts from the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, the Outstanding Talent Award from the China Steel Construction Society, the Innovation Award for Industry-University-Research Cooperation from the China Industry-University-Research Collaboration Association, the Standard Master Award from the China Association for Engineering Construction Standardization, the Third National Innovation Award, and the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Science and Technology Innovation Award.
